AI Adoption Among CIOs Lags Amid Data and Security Concerns, Salesforce Survey Reveals

A new Salesforce survey highlights a stark reality in enterprise Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption: while 84% of Chief Information Officers (CIOs) see AI as transformative as the internet, only 11% have fully implemented the technology. The findings point to significant barriers, particularly data infrastructure and security concerns, hindering progress.

Conducted among 150 verified CIOs from enterprises with 1,000 or more employees, the survey sheds light on how organizations are approaching AI, the challenges they face, and the cautious strategies they’re adopting.

Key Insights from the Survey

  1. High Expectations but Limited Expertise

    • Sixty-one percent of CIOs feel pressure to be AI experts, despite acknowledging gaps in their knowledge.
    • CIOs overwhelmingly agree on AI’s transformative potential, with 67% adopting a cautious stance compared to their approach to previous technologies.
  2. Data and Security Dominate AI Priorities

    • CIOs allocate a median of 20% of their budgets to data management and infrastructure, compared to just 5% for AI initiatives.
    • Security risks and insufficient data quality are cited as major obstacles to AI deployment.
  3. Stakeholder Mismatches and Unrealistic ROI Expectations

    • Sixty-eight percent of CIOs believe business stakeholders hold unreasonable expectations for AI return on investment (ROI).
    • Functions like customer service and marketing showcase contrasting readiness levels, with the former seen as having strong use cases but low preparedness and enthusiasm.
  4. Pilot Projects Take Center Stage

    • Seventy-five percent of organizations remain in the experimental stage of AI adoption, with CIOs preferring to launch pilot initiatives to demonstrate AI’s value before broader rollouts.
  5. Peer Networks as a Key Resource

    • CIOs report turning to peers at other companies as their most trusted source for AI-related insights, emphasizing the need for collaboration and shared learning.

The Rise of Shadow AI

The survey reveals a growing trend of unsanctioned AI use in enterprises, with employees incorporating generative AI tools into workflows without IT oversight. This shadow AI usage exacerbates security risks, as sensitive data is often handled outside approved channels.

“Generative AI is one of the most transformative technologies of this century,” said Juan Perez, CIO at Salesforce. “This research highlights the foundational work CIOs are undertaking to ensure AI’s responsible and impactful implementation.”

Addressing Challenges and Driving Adoption

Security and data challenges dominate CIOs’ concerns, requiring deliberate investment and planning. Despite these hurdles, CIOs are optimistic, with 77% reporting strong executive buy-in on AI initiatives. However, only 47% feel confident in their current AI budgets, underlining the uncertainties in this nascent phase.

“Data initiatives have become urgent priorities,” added Perez. “Organizations must integrate, modernize, and secure their data systems to unlock AI’s potential.”

The Path Ahead for Enterprise AI

The findings suggest that while AI adoption remains in its early stages, enterprises are laying the groundwork for its broader use. Through peer collaboration, pilot programs, and a focus on data readiness, CIOs aim to bridge gaps in expertise and organizational readiness.

As Perez noted, “This is the perfect opportunity for knowledge sharing. By working together, CIOs can build not just successful AI strategies, but a thriving AI-powered economy.”

Methodology: Salesforce partnered with NewtonX to conduct a survey between July 23 and July 30, 2024. The survey included responses from CIOs in 18 countries and 17 industries, each representing enterprises with at least 1,000 employees.
