Abu Dhabi Expands Autonomous Taxi Operations on Yas Island
Abu Dhabi has expanded the commercial operations of autonomous taxis on Yas Island, marking another step in the emirate’s strategy to advance smart mobility and autonomous transport systems.
The initiative is being implemented under the supervision of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council, with the Integrated Transport Centre overseeing the expansion.
New Operators Join Autonomous Mobility Ecosystem
The programme now includes additional operators such as Apollo Go and Autogo, which will enhance transportation options for both residents and visitors.
The expansion reflects Abu Dhabi Mobility’s growing role in deploying advanced transport technologies and gradually increasing the availability of driverless transportation services across the emirate.
Apollo Go is the autonomous ride-hailing platform developed by Baidu, which has been expanding its robotaxi services globally.
Advancing Future Mobility in the UAE
The latest development comes as Abu Dhabi continues to make progress in testing and adopting autonomous transport technologies.
In February 2026, Tesla began supervised road trials of its self-driving vehicles in the emirate.
The trials involve Tesla vehicles operating on public roads with drivers on board for safety, forming part of a structured programme designed to ensure operational readiness.
Regulatory Framework for Innovation
The autonomous vehicle testing programme is being coordinated by the Integrated Transport Centre, with support from the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council.
The initiative is also being conducted in coordination with the UAE Cabinet Legislation Lab, which is helping establish regulatory frameworks that support innovation while ensuring safety standards.
Officials say the programme aims to create a regional model for testing driver-assistance and autonomous driving technologies, balancing technological advancement with responsible regulation.
