UAE Announces Road Closures Amid Dubai Metro Blue Line and Etihad Rail Construction

As the UAE accelerates the development of its public transportation infrastructure, authorities have initiated road closures and diversions to facilitate construction work on two of the country’s most ambitious projects — the Dubai Metro Blue Line and Etihad Rail.

These mega initiatives aim not only to boost transport connectivity across the emirates but also to improve the overall quality of life by reducing traffic congestion and cutting daily commute times for residents.

Etihad Rail: Sharjah Diversions in Full Swing

To make way for the Etihad Rail network, which will connect all seven emirates and extend into the GCC, Sharjah has announced a two-month road closure near Mleiha Road and Sharjah Ring Road, close to University Bridge. The closure began on July 1 and will continue until August 30.

The new rail system is anticipated to be a game-changer for Sharjah commuters, many of whom travel daily to Dubai and face heavy traffic during peak hours. Authorities are working on creating the required infrastructure while maintaining traffic flow through temporary diversions.

Dubai Metro Blue Line: Closures in Mirdif and Academic City

Construction is also underway on the Dubai Metro Blue Line, with traffic diversions introduced in Mirdif to facilitate the upcoming transport route. This includes:

  • The roundabout intersection between 5th and 8th Street near City Centre Mirdif has been closed.

  • A new access road to the mall’s parking area is being provided.

  • U-turn access for residents near Ghoroob Square is available for smoother traffic management.

Meanwhile, in Dubai Academic City, 63 Street in front of the German International School has been closed in both directions, with alternative entry and exit routes created to ensure continued access.

The Blue Line is expected to launch operations by September 9, 2029, and will significantly transform urban mobility. The metro will be the first to cross Dubai Creek, linking residential neighborhoods to Dubai International Airport in just 20 minutes and cutting traffic congestion by 20%.

A Vision for a 20-Minute City

These infrastructure projects align with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which envisions a "20-minute city" — where over 80% of essential services are within a 20-minute commute. The projects are also set to reduce the nation’s reliance on private vehicles, contributing to more sustainable urban living.

Motorists are advised to stay updated on temporary traffic changes and plan their journeys accordingly as the country continues its transformation toward a more connected future.
