UAE Announces New Speed Limits on Four Key Roads in 2025
In a move aimed at improving road safety and ensuring smoother traffic flow, UAE authorities have introduced new speed regulations on four major roads across the country in 2025. The updates include changes to both maximum and minimum speed limits, affecting motorists in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Ras Al Khaimah.
With many residents spending significant time on the roads, these changes are expected to bring relief to some drivers while ensuring a safer driving environment overall.
Below are the four roads where new speed limits have officially come into effect:
1. E311: Minimum Speed Limit Removed
Authorities in Abu Dhabi have officially lifted the minimum speed limit of 120 km/h on the leftmost lanes of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Road (E311). Until recently, motorists could be fined Dh400 for driving below 120 km/h in these lanes. However, as of April 14, the road markings enforcing the minimum speed have been removed.
The maximum speed limit of 140 km/h remains unchanged. This adjustment is aimed at improving the flow of heavy vehicles and accommodating a wider range of driver speeds.
2. Abu Dhabi – Sweihan Road (E20): Speed Limit Reduced
As of April 14, the speed limit on Abu Dhabi – Sweihan Road, also known as International Airport Road (E20), has been reduced from 120 km/h to 100 km/h.
Drivers using this road are advised to be cautious and aware of the new limit to avoid penalties for speeding.
3. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed International Road (E11): Speed Limit Reduced
The Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed International Road (E11), a vital link between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, has also undergone a speed limit reduction.
Effective from April 14, the speed limit has been reduced from 160 km/h to 140 km/h. The E11 is one of the UAE’s longest and most heavily used highways, running through Sharjah, Ajman, and Ras Al Khaimah, and is also known as Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai.
4. Ras Al Khaimah: Speed Reduced on Sheikh Mohammed bin Salem Street
Earlier in the year, Ras Al Khaimah authorities implemented new speed limits on a key stretch of Sheikh Mohammed bin Salem Street.
The new limit is 80 km/h, reduced from 100 km/h, on the section between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Roundabout (Al Riffa) and Al Marjan Island Roundabout. The changes have been in effect since January 17, 2025.
In addition to reducing the risk of speeding-related accidents, the radar speed limit has also been adjusted to 101 km/h, down from 121 km/h.
Safety First
Authorities across the Emirates continue to monitor road safety and traffic flow, with periodic updates to speed limits reflecting evolving road conditions and traffic patterns. Motorists are encouraged to stay informed and adhere to all traffic regulations to avoid fines and maintain safe driving habits.
