Summer Solstice on June 21 Marks Official Start of Summer in UAE

The summer solstice on June 21 marks the official start of summer and the longest day of the year for the UAE and the entire Northern Hemisphere. This astronomical event signals the point when the Earth’s axis tilts closest toward the Sun, resulting in the maximum amount of daylight hours.

The term “solstice” comes from Latin — sol meaning Sun and sistere meaning to stand still — referring to the moment the Sun appears to pause before reversing direction. For the Northern Hemisphere, the summer solstice consistently falls around June 21 each year. On this day, the Sun’s rays are directly overhead the Tropic of Cancer (approximately 23.37° North), giving the UAE its longest period of daylight.

Temperature Trends Around the Solstice

Although the solstice marks the peak of solar radiation, it does not cause an immediate spike in temperatures. In the UAE, daily June temperatures typically range between 47°C to 49°C, with occasional peaks reaching 50°C. The rise in heat throughout June is more gradual, with meteorological data showing an average temperature increase of about 2 to 3 degrees Celsius compared to May.

This warming is part of a seasonal trend rather than a direct effect of the solstice itself. The solar energy absorbed during the longest day takes time to heat the Earth's surface and atmosphere, which leads to rising temperatures in the weeks following the solstice.

The Role of Humidity in Perceived Heat

Humidity plays a critical role in how hot the weather feels, especially in coastal areas of the UAE where moisture levels are higher. When humidity is high, it reduces the body’s ability to cool itself through sweating, increasing the heat index — the “felt” temperature that often exceeds the actual thermometer reading.

Humidity levels depend on the source of the air mass: air coming from the sea carries more moisture and results in higher humidity, while air from drier inland areas tends to reduce moisture levels.

What the Solstice Means for Summer

Following the summer solstice, daylight hours remain longer, meaning the UAE will continue to receive substantial solar radiation, which gradually contributes to the intensification of summer heat. Residents should expect continued high temperatures combined with humidity, making summer one of the hottest seasons in the region.
