Sharjah Police Unveil AI-Powered Facial Recognition Patrol Cars to Enhance Public Safety

Sharjah Police have launched a cutting-edge system incorporating live biometric facial recognition technology in patrol vehicles, marking a significant step forward in the country's public safety and traffic management initiatives. The advanced system, which is integrated into the smart cameras and bars of the patrol cars, allows for real-time data analysis and identification. This technology is connected to relevant authorities' databases, enabling immediate action when a match is found against a police watchlist.

Enhanced Surveillance and Crime Prevention

Major Dr. Saeed Bin Hada, Head of the Innovation Branch at Sharjah Police, discussed the system’s capabilities, emphasizing that it can identify wanted individuals in real time. The system’s AI-powered features can also detect violations such as speeding, phone use, and even smoking while driving, enhancing the ability to enforce traffic laws and ensure public safety.

"Initially, the patrols will roll out in a trial phase, followed by phased upgrades," said Major Dr. Bin Hada. This is part of Sharjah Police's broader strategy to deploy smart technologies to improve traffic safety and law enforcement across the emirate.

Transforming Traffic Management with Technology

Sharjah Police are adopting advanced surveillance technologies to streamline traffic management and improve road safety. The use of smart surveillance systems, including drones and facial recognition tools, enables authorities to monitor traffic in real time, detect violations, and prevent accidents. The predictive technologies used in these systems can even detect speeding violations before they occur, providing a proactive approach to road safety.

Additionally, the system is designed to integrate with mobile applications that monitor traffic violations such as seat belt usage and phone use while driving. These initiatives encourage compliance with road safety regulations and improve overall driver behaviour.

Collaboration for Smarter Solutions

The project also highlights the importance of collaboration between Sharjah Police, technology companies, research institutions, and engineering committees. By working together, they aim to develop innovative, locally tailored solutions to improve road safety and traffic flow.

Sharjah Police are also focusing on enhancing the city's traffic monitoring infrastructure. The use of data-driven technologies allows for real-time traffic analysis, which supports more effective planning and enforcement. These efforts are aimed at reducing congestion, increasing safety, and promoting responsible driving behaviour.

The Future of Traffic Safety in Sharjah

Sharjah’s push for smart traffic management systems extends beyond facial recognition technology. The city has also introduced systems that automatically synchronize traffic signals, optimizing traffic flow for priority vehicles such as emergency responders and government convoys. This innovation is expected to significantly improve response times in critical situations.

As these technologies evolve, Major Dr. Saeed Bin Hada emphasized the importance of real-world testing, ensuring that the systems perform effectively before full-scale implementation. This phased approach will help refine and improve the system for wider use across Sharjah.

Sharjah Police’s commitment to integrating innovation in policing has resulted in notable achievements, including the registration of intellectual property for innovative solutions, the establishment of innovation incubators, and recognition in international competitions.
