RTA Advances Digital Transformation with 40% Completion of nol Payment System Upgrade

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has made significant progress in upgrading its nol digital payment system, achieving 40% completion in transitioning to an advanced account-based ticketing (ABT) system. The project, valued at AED 550 million, aims to modernize public transport payment methods in alignment with global digital payment trends and financial technology (fintech) advancements. Scheduled for completion by the end of Q3 2026, the upgrade will introduce new features, enhancing convenience and flexibility for commuters.

Phased Implementation of the Upgrade

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, stated that the upgrade is being executed in three phases:

  • Phase 1: The central system is being enhanced to enable the creation of digital accounts for users, linking them to existing nol cards.
  • Phase 2: A new generation of nol cards will be introduced, incorporating advanced technologies for seamless integration with banking card systems.
  • Phase 3: The final phase will allow the use of alternative payment methods, including bank cards and digital wallets, for public transport fare payments across Dubai.

Key Features of the Upgraded nol System

The upgraded nol digital payment system will introduce multiple advanced features, transforming the way commuters manage and use their nol cards. Some of the notable enhancements include:

  • Digital Account Integration: Users will be able to create and manage digital accounts linked to their nol cards, enabling better control over fare payments.
  • Multiple Payment Options: The system will support QR code ticketing, bank cards, digital wallets, facial recognition, and fingerprint authentication, expanding the ways users can pay for public transport.
  • Automatic Balance Top-Ups: Commuters will have the option to link their nol accounts with banking services for seamless balance top-ups.
  • Enhanced Retail and Mobility Usage: The upgraded system will enable nol cards to be used beyond public transport, including digital purchases and payments at retail outlets across the UAE.

nol’s Role in Dubai’s Smart Mobility Vision

Since its launch on 9 September 2009, coinciding with the inauguration of Dubai Metro, the nol system has been instrumental in facilitating seamless travel across Dubai’s public transport network. Over the years, RTA has expanded its capabilities, introducing incentives for students in partnership with International Student Identity Card (ISIC) and launching nol Terhaal cards to offer promotional benefits for tourists and residents.

Additionally, nol cards now support payments for shared mobility services like e-scooters, enhancing first- and last-mile connectivity in Dubai. With the ongoing digital transformation, RTA’s nol system is set to become one of the most versatile and user-friendly transport payment solutions in the region.
