UAE residents are increasingly opting for Etihad Rail's passenger service over long road journeys, with the recently launched Abu Dhabi–Fujairah route becoming a popular choice for weekend travel thanks to its comfort, convenience and scenic landscapes.
Since passenger operations began on June 30, 2026, the rail service has attracted strong demand, particularly during weekends, offering travellers a stress-free alternative to cross-country driving while showcasing some of the UAE's most striking natural scenery.
Scenic Journey Across the Emirates
Operating three daily services in each direction, the train completes the journey between Mohamed bin Zayed City Station in Abu Dhabi and Al Hilal City Station in Fujairah in approximately one hour and 45 minutes.
Passengers travel through golden desert landscapes before crossing the rugged Hajar Mountains, providing a unique travel experience that differs significantly from traditional highway journeys.
The service has become especially popular with families seeking comfortable weekend escapes without the fatigue of long-distance driving.
Families Welcome the New Travel Option
Working mother Raya Al Baroudi, who lives in Abu Dhabi and regularly visits her hometown of Kalba, said the train has transformed family travel.
She explained that the rail service allows her to avoid lengthy drives with children after work while providing a safer and more relaxing journey.
According to Al Baroudi, her children particularly enjoyed watching the changing landscapes and spotting wildlife such as camels, antelopes and livestock during the trip.
She also noted that the service offers a convenient travel option for her elderly mother, making medical appointments in Abu Dhabi easier to attend without the physical strain of driving.
Premium Experience Attracts Travellers
For Asma Al Marzouqi, an Abu Dhabi resident and mother of seven, the launch of the passenger railway fulfilled a long-awaited vision of inter-emirate rail travel.
Her family booked Premium Class for their inaugural trip to Fujairah and described the experience as comfortable and well-organised, highlighting the station facilities, onboard seating and hospitality.
After arriving in Fujairah, the family used taxis to travel between the station, hotel and local attractions, creating what Al Marzouqi described as a travel experience comparable to an overseas holiday.
She said the family plans to use Etihad Rail for future trips to destinations including Al Dhafra, Dubai and Sharjah as the network expands.
Comfortable Alternative to Road Travel
Residents from Fujairah have also welcomed the service.
Umm Rashid Al Zahmi, who travelled with her family between Fujairah and Abu Dhabi, said the journey was comfortable and enjoyable for both adults and children.
She added that her family has already planned another rail trip, reflecting growing enthusiasm for passenger train travel within the UAE.
Ticket Prices and Passenger Services
Etihad Rail currently offers Comfort Class fares starting from AED 55, while Premium Class tickets begin at AED 120.
Discounted fares are available for children aged 2 to 17 and senior citizens aged 60 and above.
Passengers can book tickets through the Etihad Rail website or mobile application and are advised to arrive at stations at least 20 minutes before departure.
The Abu Dhabi station provides complimentary parking for ticket holders, while a AED 10 shuttle service connects the station with Reem Mall, ADNOC headquarters and ADNEC. Taxi services are also available outside Fujairah station to facilitate onward travel.
Network Expansion Planned
The Abu Dhabi–Fujairah route marks the first phase of Etihad Rail's passenger network.
Beginning September 30, 2026, passenger services are scheduled to expand to include new stations near Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai and Al Dhaid in Sharjah.
Additional stations in Al Dhafra and Sharjah University City are planned through late 2026 and into 2027.
Once fully operational, the 900-kilometre passenger railway network will connect 11 cities and regions across all seven emirates, stretching from Al Sila in the west to Fujairah on the UAE's east coast, further strengthening national connectivity and supporting domestic tourism.
