‘Ramadan Just Flew By’: Dubai Worshippers Gather for Final Friday Prayers Before Eid

Hundreds of worshippers gathered across the streets of Dubai on Friday for the last Jumu’ah prayer of the holy month of Ramadan, reflecting on the spiritual journey of the past weeks as the celebrations of Eid al-Fitr approach.

In areas such as Deira, rows of worshippers stood shoulder to shoulder, spreading prayer mats across pavements and even parts of the road as mosques filled. As the imam’s voice echoed through loudspeakers, workers, traders, delivery riders, and residents paused their daily routines to join the congregation.

A Moment of Reflection

For many, the final Friday prayer served as a reminder of how quickly the sacred month has passed.

Zameer Khan, a shop assistant working in a nearby plastic store, said the moment felt bittersweet.

“It feels like Ramadan just started, and now we are already in the final days. Every year we wait for this month, and once it comes it passes so quickly. The last Friday always makes you realise that Eid is just around the corner,” he said.

Nearby, delivery rider Roshan said he hurried to reach the prayer gathering after completing a delivery so he would not miss the congregation.

“Ramadan went very fast this year. We try to pray more in the last days and ask for forgiveness. The last Friday reminds us that the holy month is almost over, so we try to make the most of the remaining nights,” he explained.

Streets Turn into Prayer Spaces

As mosques filled beyond capacity, the streets surrounding them transformed into temporary prayer spaces. Worshippers lined up in orderly rows between parked cars and storefronts, while several shops briefly closed their shutters to allow workers and residents to join the prayers.

The gathering reflected the spirit of unity and devotion that characterizes Ramadan in the UAE, where communities come together for prayer and reflection throughout the month.

Mixed Emotions as Ramadan Ends

For some residents, the final Friday of Ramadan brings both joy and sadness.

“You feel happy because Eid is coming, but at the same time you feel sad that Ramadan is ending,” said Mohammed Iqbal, who works at a textile shop in the area. “During Ramadan we pray more, we fast, we try to be better people. When the month ends, you feel like the spiritual atmosphere will go away.”

Others said the day encourages self-reflection about how they spent the holy month.

“This day always makes me think about how I spent Ramadan,” said Faisal Ahmed, a mobile shop owner nearby. “Did I pray enough? Did I help others? There are only a few days left, so people try to increase their prayers.”

As worshippers gathered in large numbers for the final Friday prayer, the shared experience served as a powerful reminder of the spiritual significance of Ramadan and the sense of community it fosters across the UAE.
