UAE Reaffirms Commitment to Collaboration with BRICS on Food Security, Trade, and Environmental Conservation
Her Excellency Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), has emphasized the UAE's dedication to working with BRICS countries on joint food security initiatives, expanding food trade, and promoting environmental conservation. This commitment was highlighted during the 14th Meeting of the BRICS Ministers of Agriculture and the 10th BRICS Environment Ministers Meeting held in Moscow on June 28th.
HE Dr. Al Dahak, accompanied by HE Mohammed Saeed Al Nuaimi, Undersecretary of MOCCAE, and other ministry officials, participated in several technical sessions and meetings with BRICS counterparts. During the 14th Meeting of the BRICS Ministers of Agriculture, Dr. Al Dahak underscored the UAE's goal to develop an effective multilateral framework to enhance food security, boost trade, and establish sustainable food systems among member states.
"The UAE has a clear strategy to enhance national food security and achieve food self-sufficiency as part of our National Food Security Strategy 2051. We recognize that mitigating climate change impacts and enhancing resilience are global challenges. Therefore, we are committed to developing sustainable food systems, both domestically and internationally," said Dr. Al Dahak.
Dr. Al Dahak highlighted the UAE's efforts to enhance intra-trade, ensure supply chain sustainability, and adhere to international standards. "We are proud to sign comprehensive economic partnership agreements that facilitate smooth trade flow and remove unjustified restrictions. Promoting fair, inclusive, and equitable trade in the agricultural sector significantly contributes to building sustainable food systems worldwide," she added.
During the session on the "Establishment of BRICS Grain Exchange as an Element of Mutual Trade Development," Dr. Al Dahak reiterated the importance of trade in enhancing food security, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture. She welcomed the establishment of the BRICS Grain Exchange, anticipating it will further discussions on advancing trade in grains, a critical strategic food commodity.
At the 10th BRICS Environment Ministers Meeting, HE Mohammed Saeed Al Nuaimi emphasized the significance of addressing climate change, which affects all aspects of life. "The COP28 hosted by the UAE marked a significant turning point through the historic UAE Consensus, renewing hope in reducing global warming. A fair and equitable energy transition, coupled with international cooperation, is essential for achieving a sustainable future," he said.
Al Nuaimi reaffirmed the UAE's commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2050 and enhancing global climate action. "The collaboration among the environment ministries within the reconfigured BRICS group enhances global climate efforts, leveraging our collective resources, technologies, solutions, expertise, and scientific research. Establishing additional cooperation platforms proposed during this meeting will further enable us to achieve our shared objectives," he concluded.
A team from the Ministry, led by HE Dr. Mohamed Salman Al Hammadi, Assistant Undersecretary of the Biodiversity and Marine Life Sector at MOCCAE, participated in the 2nd Meeting of The BRICS Agriculture Cooperation Working Group. The team discussed BRICS agricultural priorities, enhanced agricultural cooperation, and developed an action plan for 2024-2028.
