UAE Introduces 'Advertiser Permit' to Regulate Social Media Ads
In a move aimed at strengthening the digital content economy and ensuring consumer protection, the UAE Media Council has officially launched the Advertiser Permit — a new regulation designed to govern advertising content published by individuals on social media platforms, whether paid or unpaid.
The initiative, unveiled on Wednesday, will come into effect within the next three months. To support the adoption of this new requirement, the permit will be issued free of charge for the first three years.
Purpose Behind the Initiative
According to the UAE Media Council, the Advertiser Permit serves several strategic objectives:
-
Regulate and develop the advertising content economy
-
Boost competitiveness in the digital advertising sector
-
Encourage investment and attract content creators to the UAE
-
Protect the public from misleading, deceptive, or non-compliant advertisements
Permit Requirements and Conditions
The newly introduced permit will be mandatory for any individual intending to post promotional content online. This includes both paid partnerships and unpaid endorsements.
Key conditions include:
-
Permit is required for individuals publishing advertisements on social media
-
Minimum age to apply is 18 years, though exceptions may be made under specific terms
-
Trade license in electronic media is mandatory for citizens and residents
-
For individuals under 18, the license must be obtained by a legal guardian
-
Tourists and visitors can apply for the permit via a licensed UAE agency
This move places the UAE at the forefront of regulating the rapidly evolving social media advertising landscape. The permit aligns with broader efforts to standardize digital media practices, promote responsible advertising, and enhance consumer trust.
The Council added that further guidelines and implementation frameworks will be shared with the public and agencies ahead of the permit's rollout.
