MBZUAI Welcomes Record-Breaking Cohort of Graduate Students to Abu Dhabi's AI Hub

Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) has welcomed its largest and most diverse cohort to date, marking a significant milestone in the institution's history. This fall, 209 students from 36 countries, including 44 Emiratis, have joined the university's expanding academic community. The new intake includes the university's inaugural cohorts in computer science and robotics, fields that were introduced just last year.

With more than 4,800 applications and an admission rate of just 5%, the competition for a place at MBZUAI was intense. The Fall 2024 cohort is composed of 147 master’s students and 62 Ph.D. candidates specializing in computer science, computer vision, machine learning, natural language processing, and robotics. The university’s total student body now stands at 381, with representation from 49 countries and a gender distribution of 30% female and 70% male.

Professor Timothy Baldwin, MBZUAI's Provost, highlighted the university's growing reputation in the global AI landscape. "Our continued growth is a testament to MBZUAI’s position as a leader in AI research and education. We are committed to harnessing AI for good, addressing real-world challenges, and contributing positively to both society and industry," he stated.

MBZUAI's international appeal is bolstered by its commitment to diversity, inclusion, and research excellence. The university's Undergraduate Research Internship Program (UGRIP), which has seen a significant number of participants continue their studies at MBZUAI, further underscores its role in nurturing the next generation of AI specialists.

As the university marks its fifth anniversary on September 5, it continues to climb the global rankings, recognized as one of the top 100 computer science universities worldwide. In addition to its current offerings, MBZUAI is expanding with three new departments in human-computer interaction, statistics and data science, and computational biology, reinforcing its position as a hub for cutting-edge AI research and innovation.
