Major Changes Coming to the UAE in 2025: New Rules and Fees to Impact Daily Life
As we approach the new year, significant changes are set to reshape daily life in the UAE. From traffic law updates to the introduction of air taxis and new environmental regulations, here’s a look at the changes residents can expect in 2025.
1. New UAE Traffic Law
Starting March 29, 2025, the UAE will enforce a new traffic law that reduces the legal driving age to 17. It will also include e-bikes and e-scooters in regulations. Tougher penalties are being introduced for drunk driving, jaywalking, and hit-and-run accidents, with fines reaching up to Dh100,000 and jail sentences for serious offenses.
2. Air Taxis in Abu Dhabi and Dubai
Electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) air taxis will soon take to the skies in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai. In Abu Dhabi, these air taxis will cut 60- to 90-minute car rides down to 10- to 20-minute flights. Dubai plans to launch its air taxis by December 2025, offering quicker commutes between key locations like Dubai International Airport and Palm Jumeirah.
3. Smart Travel System in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport will expand its biometric-enabled smart travel system, allowing all passengers to complete immigration processes, shop at duty-free outlets, and access lounges without needing to present a boarding pass or passport by 2025.
4. Free Wi-Fi at Public Bus Stops
By 2025, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will expand free Wi-Fi service to more public bus stations across the emirate, offering greater connectivity for commuters.
5. New Salik Charges
Dubai’s Salik toll system will introduce a new “variable road toll pricing” model starting in February 2025. During peak hours (6 AM - 10 AM and 4 PM - 8 PM), the charge will be Dh6, with Dh4 charged during off-peak times. There will be no charge between 1 AM and 6 AM.
As the UAE prepares for these transformative changes in 2025, residents can expect a significant shift in how they navigate daily life. From the modernization of transport systems with air taxis and smart travel solutions to stricter traffic regulations and updated fees, these updates are designed to improve efficiency, sustainability, and safety. Staying informed about these changes will help UAE residents adapt to the evolving landscape and make the most of the new opportunities the year has to offer.
