ICBA Highlights Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Land Restoration at COP16

The International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) showcased its transformative contributions to combating desertification and promoting sustainable land restoration at the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). Held under the theme “Our Land. Our Future,” the event marked the first UNCCD COP hosted in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the UNCCD.

Dr. Tarifa Alzaabi, Director General of ICBA, emphasized the organization’s commitment to sustainable solutions tailored to arid and saline environments, stating:

“Our focus on empowering women, advancing biosaline agriculture, and building capacity underscores our commitment to creating sustainable and resilient communities.”

Key Contributions and Strategic Dialogues

  • High-Level NENA Dialogue: Dr. Alzaabi participated in the “NENA High-Level Breakfast Dialogue on Investment for Planet and People,” discussing climate-resilient solutions and nature-based approaches to support sustainable development in the region.
  • Dryland Cereal Innovations: In collaboration with ICRISAT and the Islamic Development Bank, ICBA highlighted advancements in stress-tolerant crops, efficient water use, and flagship programs like AWLA and ICBA-YES, which empower women and youth.
  • Fireside Chat at UAE Pavilion: ICBA led discussions on biosaline agriculture’s transformative potential, presenting salt-tolerant crops and innovative technologies to restore degraded lands and ensure long-term agricultural sustainability.

Promoting Science and Community Empowerment

  • Regenerative Agriculture Advocacy: At the Agri-Food Systems Day, Ms. Nour El Jundi detailed ICBA’s regenerative agricultural practices aimed at restoring degraded lands and enhancing soil health.
  • Innovative Soil Restoration Techniques: ICBA hosted sessions on soil health at the UAE Pavilion, presenting advanced biosaline techniques and showcasing the Emirates Soil Museum as a hub for knowledge sharing and capacity development.

Showcasing Stress-Tolerant Seeds

ICBA’s work at COP16 highlighted its portfolio of stress-tolerant seeds, including UAE-native varieties designed for saline and arid environments. These seeds are critical in combating soil erosion, enhancing biodiversity, and improving agricultural resilience.

Looking Ahead

ICBA’s active participation at COP16 reinforces its position as a global leader in tackling desertification, land degradation, and food insecurity. By advancing scientific research, fostering partnerships, and empowering communities, ICBA remains at the forefront of driving sustainable and inclusive land restoration practices.
