Emirates Health Services Hosts Innovation Hackathon to Address Key Healthcare Challenges in the UAE
Emirates Health Services (EHS) has successfully hosted the "Innovation Hackathon," a pioneering event aimed at tackling key challenges in the healthcare sector and promoting innovation across the industry. The three-day event, attended by H.E. Dr. Yousif Mohammed Al Serkal, Director General of EHS, brought together a diverse group of healthcare professionals, technologists, and innovators to brainstorm and develop creative solutions for improving patient care and healthcare processes.
Aligned with the UAE's healthcare strategies, such as the National Strategy for Wellbeing 2031 and the UAE Centennial 2071, the hackathon sought to explore new technologies and methodologies to enhance healthcare services. These national strategies emphasize building sustainable, innovative healthcare systems and improving service delivery in alignment with the UAE's vision to be a global leader in healthcare innovation.
Dr. Sara AlShaya, Director of the Data and Statistics Department at EHS, highlighted that the hackathon marked a significant step in EHS's ongoing efforts to transform the healthcare sector. She pointed out that the event reflects EHS’s dedication to empowering both young and seasoned professionals to develop new technologies and ideas that improve healthcare services. Among the targeted outcomes of the hackathon were reducing waiting times, improving diagnostic accuracy, and enhancing communication with patients.
The event focused on integrating advanced data analytics techniques such as exploratory data analysis, predictive analytics, and machine learning models to improve inpatient care, surgical operations, and emergency department efficiency. Participants were challenged with real-life operational issues faced by EHS, and tasked with finding innovative solutions using cutting-edge technology. EHS provided all participants with the necessary tools and training on the SAS Viya platform, a unified system that supports innovation in healthcare practices.
The hackathon not only fostered collaboration among professionals from diverse backgrounds, including developers, designers, and healthcare specialists, but also emphasized the importance of data in improving healthcare outcomes. This initiative, part of EHS's ongoing commitment to institutional excellence, aims to create solutions that address both present and future challenges in healthcare, ultimately contributing to the UAE's goal of becoming a knowledge-based economy.
