Ras Al Khaimah’s Haunted Palace Turns into a Pop-Up Market for Local Businesses
Al Qasimi Palace, popularly known as the “Haunted Palace” for its mysterious reputation and long-standing ghost stories, took on a different identity in October as it welcomed visitors, independent vendors and emerging entrepreneurs for a three-day Halloween-themed pop-up market.
The Qasr Al Jin pop-up, held from October 16 to 18, brought together small businesses, cafés and visitors at the historic landmark, offering an opportunity to explore the palace while supporting local enterprises.
Haunted Palace Offers Visitors a Different Experience
For Jana Belal, a lifelong Ras Al Khaimah resident, the event provided an opportunity to finally explore a place she had heard about throughout her childhood.
Belal said that whenever she passed the palace or heard it mentioned during her school years, it was usually associated with ghost stories and frightening legends.
“Growing up in Ras Al Khaimah, anytime we drove past the palace or even talked about it in school, it was always associated with ghosts and scary stories,” she told Khaleej Times.
She said visiting the building with a friend brought back memories of the stories she had grown up hearing. Since the palace had not been open to the public for an extended period, being able to explore its interiors made the experience particularly memorable.
Beyond the unusual setting, Belal appreciated the opportunity to support independent businesses gathered at one venue. Having previously run a small business herself, she said she makes a point of shopping from local vendors at pop-up events.
The Halloween theme also added to the experience, with vendors incorporating seasonal decorations and themed products into their stalls.
Belal particularly enjoyed the animals brought to the event, describing herself as an animal lover. She also explored the palace's upper floor, where rooms displayed artefacts, furniture and decorative pieces influenced by different cultures.
She said each room had its own theme, with attention given to details ranging from bed frames and paintings to smaller decorative elements.
Pop-Up Gives Emerging Businesses a Platform
While the palace attracted visitors through its distinctive history and atmosphere, the event also provided a platform for small businesses to reach new customers.
For Fatima Al Blooshi, owner of Blissfy, the unusual venue was a major reason for participating. She said the concept stood out from conventional pop-up events because the palace's mysterious reputation was likely to generate curiosity and attract visitors.
The event marked Blissfy's first participation in a pop-up following the business's official launch.
Al Blooshi described the experience as demanding but rewarding, with strong visitor turnout translating into encouraging sales and positive customer responses.
She said the palace's architecture and atmosphere also made the three-day event memorable for the business.
Mido Uses Event to Reach New Customers
Maryam Eissa Al Blooshi, owner of Mido, also participated in a pop-up event for the first time. The business saw the opportunity as a way to introduce its products to a wider audience and engage directly with potential customers.
Maryam said the stories surrounding the palace initially sparked her interest, but the actual atmosphere was more enjoyable than frightening.
She noted that the unusual setting, combined with visitors' curiosity about both the venue and the products on display, made the event different from conventional markets.
For Mido, the pop-up provided an opportunity to understand customer preferences, introduce its products and build relationships with visitors.
A Different Setting for Supporting Local Entrepreneurs
For both Blissfy and Mido, the Qasr Al Jin pop-up marked an introduction to selling directly to visitors at a public event. It also offered practical experience in customer engagement and reaching potential buyers.
The three-day gathering demonstrated how unconventional venues can create opportunities for emerging businesses while giving residents and visitors new ways to explore local landmarks.
At Al Qasimi Palace, the event brought together two attractions: the curiosity surrounding a building known for its mysterious reputation and the opportunity to discover and support independent businesses in Ras Al Khaimah.
