Ramadan 2025: Expected Date for Crescent Moon Sighting in India and Saudi Arabia
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, holds immense significance for Muslims worldwide. As the holy month approaches, the sighting of the Ramadan crescent moon is a highly anticipated event, marking the beginning of fasting and religious observances. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, which follows the solar cycle, the Islamic Hijri calendar is based on lunar phases, making moon sighting crucial in determining the start of Ramadan.
The Ritual of Moon Sighting
The process of moon sighting begins at sunset on the last day of Sha'ban, the month preceding Ramadan. Dedicated moon sighters worldwide scan the western horizon for the delicate crescent, awaiting confirmation of the new month. In Saudi Arabia, the Judicial High Court officially records testimonies from individuals who have sighted the moon, subsequently announcing the beginning of Ramadan.
This tradition not only signifies the start of fasting but also reinforces a sense of unity among Muslims across the globe. Generally, the crescent moon is first sighted in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and some Western nations, whereas South Asian countries like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh observe the moon a day later.
When Will Ramadan 2025 Begin?
In a rare occurrence, Muslims worldwide are expected to begin Ramadan simultaneously this year. This alignment is due to the coinciding observation of Sha'ban 1446 AH by South Asian nations such as India and Pakistan alongside Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and other Arab countries. As a result, Moon Sighting Committees in these nations have officially requested Muslims to observe the crescent moon on the evening of Friday, February 28, 2025, corresponding to 29 Sha'ban 1446 AH in the Islamic calendar.
If the crescent moon is sighted on February 28, Taraweeh prayers will commence that night, and fasting will begin on Saturday, March 1, 2025. However, if the moon is not sighted, Ramadan will officially start on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
This synchronized moon sighting underscores the importance of shared Islamic traditions, fostering unity and spiritual preparation for the holy month ahead.
