Dubai Approves 20-Minute City Plan and Major Urban Development Initiatives

Dubai’s Supreme Committee for Urban Planning has approved the city’s transit-oriented development (TOD) plan, a strategic urban initiative aimed at optimizing land use around metro stations. The plan supports the 20-Minute City concept, facilitating ease of access to daily essentials within a 20-minute commute using various modes of sustainable transportation.

Advancing the 20-Minute City Concept

The TOD plan is designed to reduce reliance on private vehicles by encouraging the use of metro and sustainable transport systems. The initiative aligns with Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan and the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, to establish Dubai as one of the world’s most livable cities.

Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Supreme Committee for Urban Planning, highlighted that the newly approved urban strategies and projects will foster economic diversification, business expansion, and job creation. He emphasized that these initiatives will enhance housing accessibility and essential services while reinforcing Dubai’s position as a global leader in urban planning.

Dh55 Billion Real Estate Investments

During its 33rd meeting, the Supreme Committee reviewed key strategies to streamline real estate development approvals, reducing transaction processing times by 60%. The total value of projects benefiting from this improved approval system exceeds Dh55 billion. Additionally, 450 million square feet of land have been designated for citizen housing, with more than 50 master plans and projects reviewed and approved. These initiatives support the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which aims to double the city’s economy and position it among the world’s top three urban economies by 2033.

Dubai Walk: A Pedestrian-Friendly Initiative

One of the landmark projects under the new urban development plan is ‘Dubai Walk,’ a comprehensive master plan that will create over 6,500 kilometers of pedestrian pathways across 160 areas. This initiative aims to make Dubai a year-round pedestrian-friendly city.

Key Pedestrian Routes:

  • Al Ras Loop: A 15-kilometer pathway linking major historical landmarks in Al Ras, including a five-kilometer stretch along the waterfront.

  • Future Loop: A two-kilometer pathway near the Museum of the Future featuring an iconic architectural bridge. The bridge, ranging between six to 15 meters in width, will connect ten key locations and include an air-conditioned level covering 30,000 square meters for year-round accessibility. An additional 30,000 square meters of open spaces will incorporate shaded areas and greenery.

Super Block Initiative

As part of the Dubai Walk project, the ‘Super Block’ initiative will introduce car-free pedestrian-friendly zones in several key areas, including Al Fahidi, Abu Hail, Al Karama, and Al Quoz Creative Zone. This urban space design concept aims to enhance public mobility and overall livability.

Commitment to Sustainable Urban Growth

Dubai’s commitment to urban sustainability extends beyond its metropolitan core. The master plan for the Saih Al-Salam corridor will include five service and recreational stations across Dubai’s rural regions, developed in collaboration with private sector partners. Additionally, the city plans to implement beautification strategies and new development projects in the countryside to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors.

Al Tayer reaffirmed Dubai’s dedication to advancing urban planning and development projects that enhance the city’s global leadership in quality of life and sustainable infrastructure.
