UAE Successfully Launches Etihad-SAT Aboard SpaceX Rocket, Its Second Satellite in Two Months

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has successfully launched its latest high-precision observational satellite, Etihad-SAT, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The satellite was launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on Saturday, March 15, 2025, marking the country’s second satellite launch in the first quarter of 2025.

The Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), which developed Etihad-SAT, confirmed that the first-stage booster of the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket made a successful return, completing its 400th successful landing.

A Leap in UAE’s Space Ambitions

Etihad-SAT is the UAE's first Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite, designed to operate 24/7, capturing images regardless of weather conditions, including rain, fog, and darkness. The 220kg satellite will orbit 500km above Earth in low Earth orbit (LEO) and will be instrumental in monitoring oil spills, managing natural disasters, aiding maritime navigation, and supporting agriculture.

Cutting-Edge Imaging Technology

Unlike optical satellites, which rely on sunlight for imaging, SAR satellites like Etihad-SAT emit electromagnetic radar waves that reflect off surfaces and return signals based on material properties. This allows for high-resolution mapping, environmental monitoring, and disaster response, even in challenging conditions.

Key Imaging Modes of Etihad-SAT

Etihad-SAT has three distinct imaging modes, enhancing its capabilities for various applications:

  • Spot Mode: Captures high-resolution images of specific small areas.
  • Scan Mode: Provides wider area coverage for broader analysis.
  • Strip Mode: Enables imaging of longer sections of the Earth's surface.

Strengthening UAE’s Space Sector

The UAE has launched multiple satellites in recent years, including optical and radar-based satellites. With Etihad-SAT, the country strengthens its position in global space exploration and Earth observation technology. The data collected will be processed using artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to generate detailed and actionable insights.

A New Chapter in Space Exploration

The launch of Etihad-SAT marks a significant milestone in the UAE’s space program, reinforcing its commitment to technological innovation, space research, and sustainable development. The satellite will play a vital role in scientific advancements, security, and environmental monitoring while contributing to the nation’s long-term space ambitions.
