Team Abu Dhabi Plots Comeback at Sardinia Grand Prix
Team Abu Dhabi manager Guido Cappellini has expressed confidence in Thani Al Qemzi and Alberto Comparato as they prepare to launch a comeback at the Regione Sardegna Grand Prix of Italy this weekend. After a challenging start to the 2024 UIM F1H2O World Championship, the team is focused on turning their season around.
Cappellini, a legendary figure in powerboat racing with 17 world championships under his belt since 2015, believes the team's recent testing in San Nazzaro has been pivotal. The conditions in San Nazzaro closely mirror those expected in Olbia, providing valuable preparation for Al Qemzi and Comparato.
“We’ve been working hard to ensure better results in round three,” Cappellini stated. “Thani won in Sardinia two years ago on a demanding circuit, and our tests have boosted his confidence. Both he and Alberto are supporting each other well, and we hope this teamwork will pay off.”
The Sardinia Grand Prix marks a return to action for the F1H2O series after an 11-week hiatus following the second round in Vietnam. Erik Stark of Victory Team currently leads the drivers' standings, with Jonas Andersson and Stefan Arand of Team Vietnam heading the team rankings.
For Team Abu Dhabi to challenge for the championship, Al Qemzi's experience will be crucial. With ten Grand Prix victories and 45 podium finishes since his 2000 debut, the Emirati driver aims to capitalize on his vast experience. He recently surpassed the 1,000 career points mark with a sixth-place finish in Vietnam, setting the stage for a strong performance in Sardinia.
Comparato, determined to make an impact in his first season with Team Abu Dhabi, draws inspiration from Cappellini’s extensive success and familiarity with the Sardinian race conditions. The young Italian is eager to reignite his campaign and contribute to the team’s resurgence.
