SLC Concludes ‘Your Summer Legislation Boost 2024’ Program Focused on AI in Legislation

The General Secretariat of the Supreme Legislation Committee (SLC) in the Emirate of Dubai has successfully concluded its third edition of the ‘Your Summer Legislation Boost 2024 Programme.’ This year’s program, themed ‘Navigating Future Technology: AI and Legislation,’ ran for six weeks and focused on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in legislative processes.

The program featured a series of legal workshops, panel discussions, and external events that examined the role of modern technology, particularly AI, in shaping future legislation. Additionally, law students from various UAE universities participated in summer internships at the SLC’s Legislation Directorate, gaining hands-on experience in legislative drafting and analysis.

H.E. Ahmad Saeed bin Meshar, SLC Secretary General, highlighted the program’s focus on exploring the potential of AI in legislation and addressing the associated risks. "This year’s program provided a critical platform to discuss how AI innovations can be harnessed in legislative processes while addressing the challenges and risks posed by AI misuse. Our agenda was rich with workshops and discussions that covered the legal and regulatory implications of advanced technology," said Bin Meshar.

The program included a variety of workshops, such as ‘Legislation as a Pillar of Future Technology,’ where Dr. Najat Al Amri, Head of Infrastructure and Government Regulatory Legislation Section at the SLC, emphasized the importance of legislative systems in supporting technological advancements in Dubai and the UAE.

Other notable sessions included workshops on the legal challenges of ‘Deepfake’ technology, the impact of AI on the UAE economy, and the use of AI in healthcare, each offering insights into how AI is influencing various sectors and the legal frameworks required to manage these innovations. Additionally, a session on ‘How AI Tools Have Enhanced Legislative Translation’ explored the role of AI in improving the efficiency and accuracy of translating legislation.

A panel discussion titled ‘Legal Challenges in Using Artificial Intelligence’ brought together SLC experts to examine the factors needed to align legislative processes with Dubai’s future AI vision. The program also included a visit to the Dubai Centre for Artificial Intelligence, where the SLC delegation explored AI applications in government services and their potential to enhance legislative work.

Dr. Najat Al Amri, Supervisor of the program, emphasized the event’s continued relevance, stating, "The ‘Your Summer Legislation Boost’ program remains a leading platform for raising awareness of legal issues, particularly the role of modern technology in the legislative field. As AI becomes increasingly integral to improving operational efficiency and output quality, our program continues to build on the successes of previous editions."
