Ministry of Climate Change and Environment to sponsor project of Carbon Ambassadors Programme

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) publicised that the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment will sponsor the Sustainable Agriculture Container, a project developed by the second batch of the Carbon Ambassadors Programme. The project targets to transform used service containers into sustainable agricultural containers, to spread environmental awareness, and inspire people to adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle. DEWA launched the second batch of the Carbon Ambassadors Programme in October 2015, as per the United Nations Development Programmes criteria, with support from the Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence (Dubai Carbon).

The programme has theory and practical sessions with 3 learning modules that vary between e-learning courses and in-class lectures. These modules include Prince2 (Project Management), Green House Gas (GHG) Accounting Training, and Energy Saving Company (ESCO) Training. In addition to these modules, DEWA also offers a range of opportunities to delegates of the program, enabling them to participate in global conferences, and workshops on sustainability such as COP21 in Paris, France, the IRENA Assembly, and Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

The practical aspect of the programme consists of implementing turn-key projects, in partnership with a number of government and private bodies. The project aims to retrofit service containers, into sustainably functioning containers. The delegates have been assigned teams, under the supervision of partners. A panel of judges will evaluate the projects, and select the best three teams.

"The Ministry strives to contribute to UAEs efforts in establishing the fundamentals of sustainable development and in protecting the environment. In line with our leaderships directives, we are pleased to collaborate with the various entities in the country in order to attain development and prosperity, said Dr. Thani Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment.

Our collaboration with DEWA aims to support innovative initiatives by the youth, in the areas of environmental sustainability in synergy with the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative, launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. During WETEX 2015, the Ministry reinforced the innovative project of the first group of Carbon Ambassadors. We commend DEWAs sponsorship of this important programme and guaranteeing its success, added Al Zeyoudi.

DEWA is keen on training the youth and developing their capabilities so that they are effective in achieving sustainable development. The Ministry encourages innovation by providing the suitable tools and training programmes that develop knowledge competences, concluded Al Zeyoudi.

In adherence with the directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and the Dubai Plan 2021, to make Dubai sustainable with its resources and make its environmental elements clean, healthy, and sustainable, DEWA is committed to involving the youth in achieving sustainable development objectives, as part of the UAE Vision 2021, to transform the UAE into one of the best countries in the world by 2021.

We greatly appreciate the Ministry of Climate Change and Environments efforts towards supporting green initiatives and development projects. These include the projects that focus on predicting the future, and contribute towards providing a more sustainable environment for generations to come. The Carbon Ambassadors are the next generation of leaders and experts who will implement ambitious National strategies and plans as well as contribute to innovating new initiatives and programmes, to achieve the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, to establish Dubai's position as a global hub for clean energy and energy efficiency, said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

DEWA supports the talented, in adherence with the National Innovation Strategy launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to make the UAE one of the most innovative countries in the world. We are pleased to be cooperating with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, to support the Carbon Ambassador Programme, and turn this project into a reality. HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum once observed: Nothing motivates an employee more than seeing the results of his own achievements, added Al Tayer.

DEWA won the Training Initiative of the Year Award from the Emirates Green Building Council, for the Carbon Ambassadors Programme. DEWA sponsors the programme to involve youth in environmental and sustainability issues.
