Under UAE labour law, employers may require staff to work during official public holidays, but employees must then either receive a substitute rest day or be paid their normal salary plus at least 50 per cent of their basic salary for that day. Legal experts note that while the law guarantees compensation, it does not clearly define a specific deadline for using compensatory leave, leaving many companies to set their own internal policies regarding when such leave can be taken. Employees who are denied compensatory leave or additional pay may raise complaints with Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, especially in cases where HR departments claim the leave has “lapsed” without proper compensation.
