Are you drinking plastic? Why your tea bags could be a health hazard

Many commercial tea bags, especially those made from synthetic materials like nylon, PET, and polypropylene, are commonly used in pyramid or silk-shaped tea bags. Research from the Autonomous University of Barcelona in December 2024 revealed that when these plastic-based tea bags are steeped in boiling water, they release millions of microplastics and nanoplastics into the tea. Specifically, a single plastic tea bag can release around 11.6 billion microplastics and 3.1 billion nanoplastics, potentially posing health risks. This follows earlier findings by McGill University in 2019, highlighting the growing concerns about the health implications of consuming tea contaminated with plastic particles.
