Road safety experts in the UAE warn that children riding e-scooters and small recreational motorbikes face higher accident risks because of a phenomenon known as “looked but failed to see.” According to Dr Mustafa Aldah, the human brain can overlook smaller or unexpected objects—like children on e-scooters—especially in busy environments where drivers subconsciously focus on larger, more familiar vehicles. Unlike licensed motorcycle riders, many teenagers use smaller, less visible e-scooters that often lack lights or reflective features. Dubai Police has cautioned families against allowing minors to ride in residential areas, particularly during Ramadan evenings when pedestrian and vehicle activity increases. Experts urge parents to ensure children wear helmets, use reflective gear, and avoid riding near moving traffic to reduce the risk of accidents.
