Doctors and mental health professionals in the UAE say excessive social media use is increasingly affecting children’s sleep, eating habits, school performance, confidence and emotional wellbeing, which is why many welcomed the new restriction on under-15s creating or fully accessing personal social media accounts. Specialists reported cases of children staying awake until early morning scrolling, skipping meals, becoming anxious when access is limited, and linking their self-worth to likes, comments and follower counts. Experts also highlighted how online pressure, exclusion from group chats, and constant comparison with influencers can contribute to anxiety, lower self-esteem and social withdrawal. At the same time, professionals emphasised that restrictions alone are not enough; parents, schools and communities also play a role in helping children build healthier digital habits, better sleep routines and stronger confidence away from screens. Do you think age limits alone can improve children’s wellbeing, or should families and schools introduce stronger screen-time boundaries too?
