What school bus safety rules should UAE parents, students, drivers and supervisors follow?
The UAE Ministry of Interior has reminded families and school transport staff of key safety guidelines under its four-month “Safe Roads for Our Students” campaign. Bus supervisors should help children board and exit safely, record absences and check the vehicle after every trip to ensure no child is left behind. Schools should designate safe pick-up and drop-off areas and inform parents if a student is absent or fails to board. Parents should accompany children to waiting areas, ensure someone is available to receive them and stay reachable. Students should arrive five minutes before the bus, wear seat belts and move at least 10 steps away after getting off. Drivers must inspect buses daily, stop safely and activate the stop sign when picking up or dropping off children. Motorists who fail to stop when a school bus’s stop arm is extended face a Dh1,000 fine and 10 traffic points, while bus drivers who fail to activate the sign face Dh500 and six traffic points.
