What happens after UAE beaches are cleaned up following an oil spill?
Removing visible oil is only the first step in recovering from the recent oil spill along the UAE’s northern coastline. Environmental experts say authorities must continue monitoring seawater, seabed sediments, marine habitats and wildlife to identify any lingering contamination. Dr Aseel Takshe of Canadian University Dubai explained that oil can remain trapped in mangroves, seagrass beds and sheltered coastal areas, potentially affecting fish, turtles, seabirds and coral communities. While sandy beaches may recover relatively quickly after cleanup, mangroves, seagrass meadows, coral communities and contaminated sediments may take several years to recover fully. Authorities may need to assess marine ecosystems over successive seasons and introduce restoration measures where necessary. The recovery process will depend on the extent of contamination, the habitats affected and the effectiveness of cleanup operations, with careful intervention essential to avoid further environmental damage.
