What does the record $6.3 billion Binance hack mean for crypto investors and exchanges?
The $6.3 billion Binance hack, the largest cryptocurrency theft on record, has exposed weaknesses in exchange security and internal operations rather than flaws in blockchain technology. Binance’s investigation initially pointed to a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer, while later findings identified additional breach points. Around $3 billion in assets linked to the hackers has been identified and frozen, including more than $2.4 billion in stablecoins blocked by Tether and Circle. Binance has pledged to cover the losses using more than $6.34 billion in company funds. Experts say the incident highlights the risks of holding assets on centralised exchanges and the need for stronger security, insurance and reserves.
What do you think? Should crypto investors move towards self-custody, or do exchanges remain a safe place to hold digital assets?
