How is Abu Dhabi’s newborn genomic screening programme helping babies before symptoms appear?
Abu Dhabi’s expanded newborn genomic screening programme has identified more than 100 cases in its first year, enabling earlier intervention for babies at risk of serious childhood conditions. The programme screens for more than 800 conditions, using genomic information to help doctors identify potential health risks before symptoms develop. One example shared by the Department of Health; Abu Dhabi involved a newborn named Sarah, whose genetic mutation indicated a risk of eye cancer. Early detection allowed her doctor to act in time to help protect her sight. The initiative forms part of Abu Dhabi’s broader strategy to use genomics, artificial intelligence and personalised healthcare to shift the focus from treating illnesses to preventing them or detecting them earlier.
