A contemporary adaptation of Alexander Belyaev’s acclaimed novel The Amphibian Man will make its Dubai debut on October 1 at New Covent Garden Theatre, Mall of the Emirates.
The production revisits the story of Ichthyander, the legendary “Sea Devil”, through a modern theatrical interpretation exploring themes of love, identity, power, nature and technology.
Directed by Golden Mask laureate Dmitry Melkin and written by award-winning playwright Mikhail Durnenkov, the production combines theatre, music and visual storytelling. Its narrative is presented through dramatic video essays designed to create an immersive stage experience.
The cast includes Maria Kurdenevich, Gladstone Makhib, Vladimir Mishukov and Vadik Korolev, lead singer of indie pop band OQJAV.
The production also incorporates a large aero screen and a stage covered with real sand, adding visual and atmospheric elements to the retelling of Belyaev’s classic story.
The Dubai performance marks the production’s debut in the UAE, offering audiences a contemporary interpretation of a novel that has long been associated with questions surrounding humanity, the natural world and scientific possibility.
