Reel Palestine Film Festival

The Reel Palestine Film Festival is back for its 11th edition at Cinema Akil, offering a cinematic journey into the rich culture, history, and resilience of Palestine. Running from 24 January to 2 February, the festival presents a compelling selection of films that shed light on Palestinian stories through the power of cinema. This year’s edition opens with Mehdi Fleifel’s To a Land Unknown, a gripping drama about two young men risking everything for a better life, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival’s Director’s Fortnight. Other highlights include Carol Mansour’s documentary A State of Passion, capturing Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah’s experiences in Gaza’s emergency rooms under bombardment. Festivalgoers will also have the rare opportunity to attend a Q&A session with acclaimed filmmaker Mohamed Jabaly following the screening of Life Is Beautiful, a heartfelt portrayal of family resilience and hope amid the hardships of war. The festival’s short film selection is divided into two programmes, each exploring themes of identity, resilience, and creativity. Palestine Islands follows a young refugee on a journey for her blind grandfather, while Mar Mara captures a girl’s imaginative escape from loss and violence. In addition to screenings, The Reel Palestine Souk returns every weekend, bringing together nearly 60 local businesses and social enterprises from Palestine, the UAE, and beyond. This year, 18 businesses from Palestine will participate, offering a diverse range of food, crafts, apparel, art, books, and more.
