Chanel Contre Rubinstein

Dubai will host the Russian-language theatrical production Chanel vs Rubinstein on September 26 at Meyana Theatre, Jumeirah Beach Hotel, bringing together two influential women whose lives and creative legacies shaped different corners of the cultural world.

The production stars Ekaterina Varnava as Gabrielle Chanel and Svetlana Ustinova as Ida Rubinstein, the celebrated performer associated with Sergei Diaghilev’s Russian Seasons. Dmitry Kondrashov plays Grand Duke Dmitry Romanov, whose presence connects the two central characters.

A story of ambition, rivalry and art

Set against a backdrop of history and mythology, Chanel vs Rubinstein explores the contrasting personalities and ambitions of its two protagonists.

The production follows a dramatic relationship shaped by love, rivalry, jealousy and artistic ambition. It also connects personal experiences with major cultural moments, including the creation of Chanel’s iconic fragrance and the emergence of Maurice Ravel’s Bolero.

The story examines themes of freedom, loneliness and the personal cost of greatness, presenting the two women as powerful figures navigating an era of artistic and social change.

Two women at the centre of the stage

Gabrielle Chanel became one of the most influential figures in 20th-century fashion, while Ida Rubinstein gained recognition as a performer and patron of the arts through the Russian Seasons and her work with leading artists of her time.

The production brings their stories together through a theatrical narrative that combines personal conflict with artistic history.

With its Russian-language format, dramatic performances and focus on two complex cultural figures, Chanel vs Rubinstein offers Dubai audiences a theatrical interpretation of ambition, creativity and rivalry.
