The Maritime Standard Awards 2021
The not-to-be missed The Maritime Standard Awards recognise and celebrate success in the shipping, ports and related sectors across the Middle East and the Indian Subcontinent. The seventh edition of TMS Awards took place in an innovative hybrid style, with around 400 participants assembling in person in the ballroom at the Dubai Trade Centre and others joining in online from around the world on Monday, 23rd November 2020. It was the only event of its type to be held in this way, following strict Covid-secure guidelines.
Furthermore, these remain the only Awards of their kind that represent all sectors within the maritime and shipping industries, a factor that has been evident since their inception. They are in particular the only Awards where all the major shipowners and operators from across the region are represented, something that TMS is extremely proud of.
The Awards are now firmly positioned as one of the world's leading shipping and maritime Awards gala dinners and are the premier event of their kind in the region. All seven events to date have been held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, and have attracted many of the region's elite shipping and maritime professionals, as well as a number of leading figures from overseas. These guests have come from a variety of industry segments, ranging from ports and terminal operators to ship owners and managers. Top executives from the worlds of maritime law and finance, classification, shipbuilding and repair and maritime education and training are also in attendance, creating unrivalled networking opportunities.
Each of the Awards have had distinguished master of ceremonies. Past MCs have included Alastair Campbell, Ruud Gullit, Lara Dutta, Tim Wilcox and Jon Culshaw. In 2020 the MCs were the locally based comedian, Ali Al Sayed, and well-known presenter Rania Ali.
Among many VIP guests, H.E. Sheikh Saeed bin Ahmed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, Executive Director, Dubai Maritime City Authority was a notable attendee, gracing the occasion as the Guest of Honour, while Mohamed Al Muallem, CEO and Managing Director, DP World, delivered the keynote address.
The 2021 TMS Awards will once again see around 20 general awards presented, in line with the recommendations of an elite, independent judging panel, as well as a number of special individual awards, recognising the contributions made by high profile industry leaders and innovators.
The Awards have set a benchmark within the industry and have become an eagerly anticipated meeting place for top executives from across the market, as well as an opportunity to reward and celebrate achievement at the highest level. It is hoped that the 2021 event will be back to being a wholly in person occasion, but TMS has shown the innovation and flexibility needed to adapt to any situation.
