UAE Travellers on Growing Gap Between Advertised Airfare Deals and Final Booking Prices

Travellers across the UAE are increasingly questioning why the attractive "fares starting from" prices featured in airline and holiday package advertisements often differ significantly from the final prices they encounter when making a booking.

Industry experts say the discrepancy is primarily driven by dynamic pricing systems, limited promotional seat availability, and changing market demand rather than misleading advertising practices.

The issue has gained greater attention as airfares have risen substantially since March 2026, following increased jet fuel costs linked to geopolitical tensions, including the US-Israel-Iran conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Limited Promotional Inventory Behind Many Advertised Deals

According to Imtiaz Hussain Nasir, Chief Executive Officer of Pinoy Tourism UAE, advertised fares are typically based on a limited number of seats available at the lowest fare category when a promotion is launched.

He explained that airlines and travel companies often market the cheapest available fares at the time of publication, but these seats can sell out quickly, especially during periods of strong travel demand.

Promotional offers are frequently tied to:

  1. Specific travel dates
  2. Particular flight schedules
  3. Limited seat allocations
  4. Advance booking requirements
  5. Restricted fare conditions

Once the lowest-priced seats are sold, booking systems automatically move customers into higher fare categories, resulting in higher final prices.

Dynamic Pricing Continues to Reshape Air Travel

Industry specialists note that dynamic pricing has become a fundamental feature of the modern aviation sector.

Airlines continuously adjust fares based on several factors, including:

  1. Demand levels
  2. Remaining seat availability
  3. Seasonal travel patterns
  4. Competitor pricing
  5. Booking trends
  6. Route performance

Nasir explained that the lowest fare classes usually contain only a small allocation of seats, which are often purchased first. As inventory decreases, prices can rise significantly.

The pricing model is particularly evident in the UAE, one of the world's busiest aviation markets, where demand can fluctuate rapidly during major holidays, school breaks, and large-scale events.

Travel Agencies Build Promotions Around Lowest Available Fares

Fazil Firoos, founder of Dubai-based Go Now Tourism, said travel agencies generally create promotional campaigns using the lowest fares supplied by airline partners.

According to Firoos, agencies receive regular fare lists from suppliers and use the lowest available prices as the basis for marketing campaigns. This is why many advertisements prominently feature the phrase "fares starting from" rather than guaranteeing availability at those rates.

He added that promotional offers are typically more common during off-peak periods when airlines are seeking to stimulate demand. During busy travel seasons, carriers often have little incentive to discount tickets because flights are already filling quickly.

Hidden Conditions Often Overlooked by Travellers

Industry professionals emphasise that promotional fares are generally genuine but are usually subject to specific terms and conditions that customers may not fully review.

These conditions can include:

  1. Advance purchase requirements
  2. Minimum stay periods
  3. Blackout dates
  4. Limited travel windows
  5. Restricted refund policies
  6. Limited seat allocations

Experts say many travellers focus primarily on the headline price without considering the detailed restrictions attached to promotional offers.

As a result, customers may become frustrated when they are unable to secure the advertised fare for their preferred travel dates.

Increased Consumer Confusion Over Fare Transparency

Travel consultants report a growing number of customer enquiries regarding fare transparency as travellers are exposed to more promotions across social media platforms, travel websites, and digital advertising channels.

Ipshita Sharma, a travel consultant at SCN Travel & More, said many consumers mistakenly assume that advertised prices will be widely available across multiple travel dates and booking periods.

However, she noted that in a high-demand market such as the UAE, the lowest-priced seats can disappear within a short period after a promotion is launched.

Calls for Greater Transparency in Advertising

While industry experts maintain that most airfare promotions are legitimate, some believe there is room for improved transparency.

Firoos suggested that promotional advertisements should clearly display:

  1. All applicable taxes
  2. Processing fees
  3. Mandatory surcharges
  4. Additional booking charges

Providing a more complete price upfront could help travellers better understand the true cost of their journey before beginning the booking process.

Travel Agents Can Help Navigate Complex Fare Structures

Experts say experienced travel consultants continue to play an important role in helping customers understand airline pricing systems.

Travel agents can assist travellers by:

  1. Explaining fare conditions
  2. Identifying hidden costs
  3. Comparing alternative flight options
  4. Recommending flexible travel dates
  5. Securing better value itineraries

This guidance can be particularly valuable during peak travel periods when prices change rapidly and seat availability is limited.

Early Booking Remains the Best Strategy

Industry professionals advise travellers to plan ahead and book as early as possible, particularly during high-demand periods such as summer holidays, Eid breaks, and school vacations.

Key recommendations include:

  1. Booking well in advance
  2. Reading fare terms and conditions carefully
  3. Comparing multiple travel dates
  4. Checking final prices before payment
  5. Looking beyond headline promotional offers

While many advertised airfare deals are genuine, experts stress that they are often available only to a small number of customers before higher fare categories take effect.

As travel demand continues to grow and dynamic pricing becomes increasingly sophisticated, understanding how airline fare systems work may help travellers make more informed booking decisions and avoid unexpected costs.
