Surge in Heat-Related Illnesses Grips the UAE as Summer Intensifies

With summer temperatures in the UAE reaching record highs, healthcare providers are warning of a significant upswing in heat-related illnesses. Cases of dehydration, heat exhaustion, sunstroke, and skin ailments have surged, particularly among vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, outdoor workers, and individuals with chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes.

Dr. Boles Gobrial of Aster Clinic in Ras Al Khaimah recounted treating a 60-year-old diabetic patient who suffered severe dehydration and heatstroke, requiring immediate cooling, IV fluids, and intensive care. Meanwhile, Dr. Shamsa Lootah of Emirates Health Services emphasized that those with reduced heat-regulating abilities, especially outdoor laborers and those with pre-existing health conditions, are at heightened risk.
Particularly worrying is the uptick in skin-related issues triggered by prolonged heat exposure. Doctors report that extreme temperatures are aggravating eczema and rash conditions, especially in sweat-prone areas of the body.
Medical professionals are urging residents to adopt effective preventive measures:

  • Hydration is key - drink plenty of water, and include water-rich foods like watermelon and cucumber.
  • Protect yourself from the sun - apply SPF-30 sunscreen every two hours.
  • Dress wisely - wear lightweight, loose, light-colored clothes, along with sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats.

These precautions are especially crucial during the ongoing intense heatwaves that have been stretching longer and becoming more severe each year.
As the UAE continues to grapple with rising temperatures, these expert insights offer timely guidance to help citizens, expatriates, and visitors stay safe and healthy this summer.
