Sharjah Embraces AI to Build Safer, Fire-Resistant Structures

In a groundbreaking move to enhance public safety, Sharjah is advancing efforts to make buildings smarter and more resilient by integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) to prevent fire-related incidents before they occur.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Sharjah Civil Defence Authority in collaboration with the American University of Sharjah (AUS), aims to leverage cutting-edge technology to foresee and mitigate fire risks, ensuring safer residential and commercial spaces across the emirate.

University-Led Research for a Fire-Safe Future

The College of Engineering at AUS, in partnership with local and international academics and governmental entities, is currently conducting research and testing to identify effective ways to use AI in fire safety systems. Findings from this study will directly influence building upgrades across Sharjah.

To support this mission, the university has also organized a two-day fire safety symposium, bringing together over 150 experts, delegates, and speakers from around the world. The event delves into AI, robotics, and fire safety engineering, encouraging interdisciplinary solutions to fire hazards.

“This symposium is a crucial first step,” said Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Hamad Abdul Karim Al Mazmi, Director of the Protection & Safety Department. “If progress continues as expected, advanced technologies may start appearing in buildings as early as next year.”

Global Insights and Local Action

One of the key speakers, Dan Munsey, Fire Chief of San Bernardino, California, shared how AI and drones are being used as real-time decision-making tools and first responders in the U.S. He noted that AI can also play a predictive role by identifying areas at higher risk of natural disasters and fire outbreaks.

Dr. Rami Hawileh, Professor of Civil Engineering at AUS, emphasized that fires are often a secondary consequence of natural disasters, such as earthquakes, but can cause greater destruction. He also stressed the importance of community awareness and education, stating that “every individual is responsible in the event of a fire.”

Long-Term Vision for Fireproof Infrastructure

As part of its broader fire safety strategy, Sharjah Municipality launched a Dh100 million project in 2023 to replace building facades with fire-resistant materials. Five buildings have already been upgraded, with a total of 40 planned for the initiative.

Last year, AUS also introduced a minor programme in fire safety and protection, aimed at training the next generation of engineers and safety professionals to tackle fire hazards more effectively.

With this initiative, Sharjah is setting a regional example by combining technology, education, and policy to proactively safeguard its urban spaces against fire threats.
